What is the difference between a Pomsky,

an

Alaskan Klee Kai (AKK)

and a Mini Husky?

See below for a breakdown:

POMSKY:

Pomsky is the creation between the Siberian Husky and Pomeranian. The additional breed that can be added for stability is the American Eskimo, while still being called a Pomsky.

Temperament/Personality:

  • Normally they are very loving and cuddly. Lap dogs.

  • They have medium to high exercise requirements.

  • They require firm training and consistency to prevent behavioral issues like chewing and destructive boredom.

  • As they are smart dogs, they can climb out of xpens, counter surf, etc.

  • They are kid and dog/cat friendly with proper introduction.

Known Health Concerns:

Patellar luxation seems to be the biggest challenge of this breed so far and is exacerbated by puppies who are over-exercised too young and then allowed to be overweight as adults.

The recessive genes possible are: Degenerative Myelopathy DM, Von Willebrand VMD1 (rare), and Methemoglobinemia has been occasionally showing as recessive gene carriers. (read more here)

Reputable Pomsky Breeders are adamant about the DNA tests, to ensure that breeding dogs are free of any genetic risks. Getting a Pomsky from a breeder that does not test could place your puppy at risk for several issues.

Physical Differences:

Pomskies tend to have thicker, fuller and wooley coats due to the Pomeranian influence. They are more broad in the body with shorter legs and moderate bone density.

They can come in a variety of colors, such as solid coats and merle and many have masks.

ALASKAN KLEE KAI

AKK (or called Klee Kai) is the creation between Alaskan Huskies, Schipperke, American Eskimo dogs, and Siberian Huskies.

Temperament/Personality:

  • They can be loving but with the heavy use of Schipperke and Alaskan Husky, the breeds used causes this dog to be more 'cat like' and aloof by nature.

  • They have high levels of energy requirements. Unless well socialized, they can be skittish and can have aggressive tendencies.

  • Socialization from birth and training is vital - work with a great UKC registered AKKAOA breeder for the best results with this breed.

Known Health Concerns:

Blood Clotting issues, Seizures, Thyroid disease, Factor VII Deficiency, Cryptorchidism, Cardiac issues (heart murmurs are common), and Patellar Luxation. With the increased use of DNA tests by good breeders, these things are starting to be removed from this breed.

They are UKC registered, so you can follow a genetic lineage through generations to see which lines carry which potential issues.

Reputable breeders have long waitlists and it's imperative to go with a reputable breeder to avoid these issues.

Physical Differences:

Klee Kai tend to be slender and athletically built with short dense fur.

They come in 3 sizes, must have a mask and specific colors to be within standard. White is a DQ.

MINI HUSKIES

There are no true miniature size Siberian Huskies.

Mini Huskies is a generic umbrella term for any mix of dogs that may have an end result of looking like a miniature Husky.

There is no breed standard and no kennel club that is working towards a breed goal. As these can be a mix of 8+ breeds, there is no standard temperament, personality, physical looks, size, etc.

All possible OFA and DNA testing should be completed on these breeds to prevent risks of knee, hip, patella, heart, thyroid, eyes, cataracts, as well as a multitude of genetic issues.
